Orion’s Sword contains several bright nebulas which make it a picturesque photographic target for astronomers. Shown in this picture is only the Sward of Orion, comprising of the Great Orion Nebula in the centre and Running Man Nebula on the left.
You can see these nebulas, particularly the Great Orion Nebula, from dark sky sites with binoculars and small telescopes. Large telescopes provide amazing views of this rich area of nebulosity.
The constellation of Orion is also known as The Saucepan in the southern hemisphere, where Orion appears to be on upside down and the central region appears like a saucepan. When considering Orion in this way the Sward of Orion (shown in this photograph) becomes the handle of the saucepan.
If you are looking for a print with a nice combination of stars and colourful nebulosity this is a good choice. With the region of the sky being so universally recognisable in both southern and northern hemispheres this makes a good all-round choice.
