The instantly recognisable Southern Cross. The stars of the cross sparkle in this photograph, with their natural colour retained by the use of special photographic filters and long exposure.
This image was taken out in the dark skies of the Wheatbelt where even on nights with partial cloud you can see the Milky Way and Southern Cross shining through the clouds drifting past.
The Southern Cross is an Australian icon and features on our flag.

The spectacular Aurora Australis is captured over a period of roughly 10 minutes in this long exposure showing the Large Magellanic Cloud, Small Magellanic Cloud and Southern Celestial Pole. It was taken at Dryandra Woodland, in the Wheatbelt of WA during a camp organised by the Astronomical Society of Western Australia.
The vibrant glow of the Aurora together with the cool blue of the LMC and SMC with silhouetted trees along the foreground make for a very pleasing photographic print.
